Cruel Methods Of Animal Testing - 2812 Words

Why do U.S companies still use cruel methods of animal testing despite The Animal Welfare Act of 1966? Millions of animals are used in painful experimentation yearly. Animals such as rabbits, dogs, cats, guinea pigs and monkeys are used in extreme testing for drugs, cosmetic and household products.(http://www.animalresearchcures.org) In the United States, no matter how cruel, pointless or painful an experiment is, it is always legal. The usage of animals in research goes way back to the early 1900’s when many tragic incidents on humans began taking place with untested products. Scientists believed that in order for products to be safe, it must be tested on an animal first before going out to the public, however, not all tests were reliable. Due to the outcomes of untested products in the 1900’s in the U.S., testing on animals became a more efficient way to ensure safety amongst its consumers. Historical Context From as early as 1937, untested products were sold to the public causing the death of more than hundred people. This product was a cough syrup which was supposed to heal anyone from a cold but instead, it contained toxins which ended up killing many. Since products as strong as drugs, cosmetics and house products contain such strong chemical ingredients, U.S. congress passed the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act in 1938 after incidents including untested products came into the picture.
